LAST month, we launched our East Lothian Courier Foodbank Appeal, and we’re asking our generous readers to dig deep and help out the county’s vital foodbanks and food initiatives in any way they can.

Now, we’re taking a closer look at a few of the organisations and sponsors involved with our appeal over the course of the next few weeks in the lead-up to our April 18 issue, when we’ll be including a donation bag in our paper which readers can fill with goods for he various groups.

There will be lots of convenient locations for you to drop off our bag – we’ll carry a full list in that week’s issue.

We are being supported by our generous sponsors – AC’s Taxis, Minibuses & Coaches; Belmont Group; EDF; and Forth Blinds.

So please, if you can, take part in our appeal and help improve the lives of people in dire need – any donation you can make, no matter how small, will be hugely appreciated.

East Lothian Roots and Fruits (ELRF) is a small charity based in Elphinstone which aims to make fruit and vegetables affordable and accessible; it offers a wide range of initiatives, including fruit and veg deliveries and cooking workshops.

The organisation currently carries out a wide range of services which include weekly fruit and veg box deliveries, a delivery service to housebound, disabled and isolated people who are unable to access food co-ops, a small community garden and health promotion sessions.

ELRF – which is one of the organisations being supported by the Courier’s Foodbank Appeal – also provides a wider range of foods to the public and operates a bite and blether lunch club to encourage socialising.

Last year, ELRF unveiled a summerhouse outside its premises on Elphinstone’s Main Street which provides an area for people to socialise and reduce isolation.

On the need for donations, Pamela McKinlay, project leader at ELRF, said: “We are delighted to be asked to take part in this initiative.

“Our wee free food pantry is used regularly by individuals and families in need. The opportunity to get different things donated is really good.

“It would be nice to get some treats, biscuits and juice, some sweets or crisps – non-essentials but things that are everyday shopping for some but treats to those in need. We always get more demand at this time of year.

“Even the smallest donation will make a difference to us.”
