THANKS to its position close to the English Border and to Edinburgh, and with easy access both from the sea and the land, East Lothian has been a regular target for invaders.

The county therefore has a rich and interesting military history.

The photos are fascinating snapshots through time – from volunteer companies formed in the 19th century and military hospitals where First World War soldiers convalesced, to the bombing of Haddington in the Second World War and soldiers parading before the Queen Mother in Musselburgh in 1956.
