The completion of works to make the east end of a town High Street safer for pedestrians has been postponed until next week following bad weather.

East Lothian Council has been carrying out three phases of roadworks in North Berwick this month as “a carriageway raised table” is being installed on the town’s junction of  High Street and Quality Street.

A carriageway raised table is a speed hump, with a long flat section, generally used at junctions and which can also improve crossing facilities for pedestrians.

The final phase of the work, raised table surfacing on High Street and Quality Street, was to be completed today (Thursday), but due to bad weather will now be completed on Tuesday.

An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: “Unfortunately, due to the inclement weather experienced on Wednesday March 27 and the need for drier conditions to lay the final carriageway surface, a further day is now required for completion.

“The remaining work is programmed for Tuesday April 2.

“To undertake this work safely, the High Street will be closed between Quality Street and Market Place between the hours of 9am and 4pm with a suitable diversion in place. Pedestrian and emergency vehicle access will be retained.

Unrelated work to patch potholes between the High Street's junction with Market Place and Westgate's junction with Westend Place took place last week and caused some frustration amongst members of the community.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this delay and would like to take this opportunity to thank both residents and businesses who have been directly impacted by the work for their ongoing cooperation, which is much appreciated.”
