A MUSSELBURGH company has won the New Business of the Year accolade at the Midlothian and East Lothian Business Awards.

Gensource – a sustainable energy services firm based at Eskmills business park – impressed judges in the competition run by Midlothian and East Lothian Chamber of Commerce (MELCC).

They highlighted the way that the company had seen “major business opportunities in what is a climate emergency facing our society” and was “building a business dedicated to using innovative solutions to address its customers’ needs”.

The company was founded in 2022 by Musselburgh resident Josh King, who, along with business partner Robert Wilson, has experienced “significant growth” and has been able to deliver projects across the MELCC region and beyond.

Mr Wilson said: “We have also hired locally, now employing a graduate engineer, as well as making many strong local partnerships to grow the brand and deliver on our works.”

He explained: “Gensource are a sustainable energy services company with a vision to see a future powered by abundant sustainable energy.

“We do this through offering full turnkey energy solutions to our customers, from initial consultancy to the full design and build of commercial and domestic sustainable energy projects, right through to the ongoing management and optimisation of energy.

“We are based at Eskmills business park, a contact we made through the MELCC, and have grown within this space, gradually increasing our office size.”

'Just the beginning'

Mr Wilson, who sits on Solar Energy UK’s grid steering group, said: “We are delighted to have been nominated for the best new business award, especially to then go on and win when there is so much talent across the region.

“It is a testament to the hard work to date and is just the beginning as we look to power the sustainability of our clients for many years to come.”

Mr King is the current vice chair of Solar Energy Scotland, and also sits on the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) technical working group for PV and battery standards across the UK.

Gensource was delighted to be part of a project for a solar PV system at the Melville Golf Centre – which scooped the Best Innovation in Business accolade at the business awards – after meeting at a chamber networking event.

Mr Wilson said: “We worked closely with Melville Golf Centre to model their electricity consumption and design a suitably sized system.

“Through our data-driven approach, we aim to be a long-term partner for our clients as they embark on their journey towards sustainability.”

He added: “We also carried out a first-of-its-kind project in the UK recently, installing a new GivEnergy 3-phase battery system with existing wind and solar generation.

“We pride ourselves on our expertise and do offer consultancy services. We recently completed a feasibility study into MW (megawatt) scale battery storage for Peterhead Port Authority, and received a glowing testimonial.”
