EAST Lothian’s MSP has welcomed a new project that allows the victims of sexual assault or rape to access their court transcripts free of charge.

Complainers can now apply for transcripts if their case was heard at the High Court from 2007 onwards – when digital recording began at Scotland’s court service.

The Scottish Government said that the aim of the pilot was to improve victims’ experience of the justice system. It will provide £100,000 funding to cover fees for accessing transcripts.

Paul McLennan, East Lothian MSP, paid tribute to those in the county who campaigned for the change.

He said: “For those in East Lothian who have been sexually assaulted or raped, this pilot will greatly improve transparency and fairness in the process of achieving retribution.

“I pay tribute to those in my constituency and beyond who have campaigned for greater fairness and accountability in the process of achieving justice.

“I encourage all those in East Lothian who can do so to make full use of this pilot fund.”
