Hannah Nuttall hopes a return to the training track can help her bridge the gap to the world's best.

Nuttall finished 12th in the women's 3000m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Glasgow, as American Elle St. Pierre took gold in a championship record time of 8:20.87.

The rapid pace proved too much for almost everyone, with St.Pierre charging past 5000m world record holder Gudaf Tsegay on the home straight while British hope Laura Muir finished fifth.

Charnwood's Nuttall ultimately finished 27.47 seconds off the pace but revealed she is hell-bent on putting in the hard yards to close that gap.

"I need to get better and need to be able to deal with those paces because I want to be able to race with those girls," she said.

"It wasn’t a shock as I knew it was going to be quick but it was a shock to the legs, that’s for sure.

"The first two laps I was like ‘ok, this is what’s happening’. I was just hanging on the whole time and trying to stay in as much as I could.

"I didn’t really perform how I wanted to but I gave it my best shot and I guess that is all I can do. I am disappointed but I am fine with my performance.

"My volume has always been quite low and I have managed to increase that but I would like to go back to basics and start upping my mileage."

Nuttall was part of a star-studded field in Glasgow, with the 26-year-old performing on the biggest stage of her career to date amongst some of the greats of the sport.

St. Pierre and Tsegay headed a leading pack that also included 3000m steeplechase world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech, who took bronze.

It meant Muir’s medal hopes were dashed early on, despite the backing of a raucous Glaswegian crowd on her return to home turf.

"Laura gets the crowd going and it is always nice to have the crowd on our side," added Nuttall.

"The crowd was amazing and it is my biggest competition to date so it is all really good experience that I can take forward.

"I am proud that I went for it and now I won’t ever be scared to do that again. I am just going to go for it and do what I can."
