Christmas dinner hampers were delivered to more than 100 families in East Lothian after an appeal was launched by a Musselburgh dad-of-three.

Zander Brown, of Ideal Flooring Solutions in Musselburgh, praised the support from the community as donations for the hampers started to roll in when people heard of the initiative via social media.

He said: “After hearing about a lot of families that were really struggling on a day to day basis this year and, with Christmas right around the corner, it got me thinking that most of us enjoy the luxury of our traditional Christmas dinner without having to worry about over spending or just not being able to have one.

“I launched a Christmas dinner hamper appeal to feed 50 families in need in our local area. The response from the community was great and the donations started rolling in.

“Working with several local charities and groups we were able to identify and deliver Christmas hampers out to over 100 families. People who are helping me deliver the meals are my wife Denise, the staff at Ideal Flooring Solutions, Councillor Kenny McLeod and Saltire Radio host Davie Martin.”

He explained: “Once the meals are handed out I will also be donating the remainder of all donations to Roots and Fruits so they can continue to help provide food and help to people who need it most in the local area.

"The struggle and the need for food is a daily challenge for so many just now for many families. While we live in a country of plenty there are too many who are struggling for the basic necessities.”

He added: “There are many projects in the local area who help families. If any one can and would like to help I would suggest reaching out to myself or some of these projects because even a little can go a long way.”

The hampers include a whole chicken, pigs in blankets, carrots, sprouts, potatoes, stuffing, gravy, Christmas pudding and custard. Ideal Flooring Solutions has contributed more than 100 selection boxes for the hampers.
