BRRRR-AVE souls are beginning the year in style by taking the plunge on New Year’s Day.

January 1 will be marked by a number of people donning their swimming costumes, shorts and more, and starting 2024 in memorable fashion.

Fundraisers will be heading to Belhaven Bay at noon on Monday for the Belhaven Bay Loony Dook.

A spokesperson for the event, which has been organised in collaboration with the Salty Sisters and Relay for Life, encouraged people to head along and make a donation to Cancer Research UK in return for some cake.

They said: “Bring a hot drink, warm clothes and join us for the most fun and healthy way to kick start 2024.

“Take a splash, dip or swim in the freezing North Sea, then gather for cake and chat in the car park.

“All ages welcome, and wear whatever makes you happy!”

A spokesperson for Dunbar RNLI confirmed that people would likely take to the waters off the town’s East Beach as well but they had not been alerted to any official event.

In Cockenzie and Port Seton, dookers will brave the waters at 12.30pm on New Year’s Day.

The event will take place in the water by Cockenzie Boat Shore.

Dookers are welcome to visit the Thorntree Inn to grab a drink beforehand to warm themselves up before jumping in.

The pub will also be open afterwards for those needing another drink along with offering sandwiches and hot drinks.

Meanwhile, in North Berwick, the celebrations get underway at noon on New Year’s Day.

Dookers traditionally gather on West Beach in the lead-up to noon near the slips at the Hope Rooms and Elcho Green.

Finally, swimmers and dippers will meet at Longniddry Bents No 2 at 10.30am.

Anyone heading along is asked to bring a donation, with the money raised split between the Longniddry Gala and East Lothian Foodbank.
