Rail users travelling between North Berwick and Edinburgh and Dunbar and Edinburgh faced more than three hours of disruption today due to a broken down train.

Scotrail confirmed that a train had broken down on the line this morning. Work was carried out to move the train but due to the breakdown the 9.19am, 10.26am, 11.25am and 12.26am trains from North Berwick to Edinburgh were all cancelled.

Similarly, the 10.38am, 11.01am, 11.44am and 1.02pm trains from Dunbar to Edinburgh were also cancelled.

An LNER service was left stuck at Prestonpans Railway Station due to the disruption.

Scotrail has confirmed that the line has now reopened.

Phil Campbell, ScotRail customer operations director, said: “The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain, wind, and snow across many parts of Scotland today.

“Our first priority is always to ensure the safety of our staff and customers.

“As a precautionary measure, Network Rail has introduced speed restrictions across many parts of the network, which will result in extended journey times and some services may be subject to cancellation.

“We ask customers to keep an eye on our website, app, or social media feeds for live updates.”

Scotrail has also lifted all ticket restrictions for the rest of the day and will allow rail users to postpone journeys until tomorrow (December 28).

LNER has also advised customers not to travel today if possible.

An LNER spokesperson said: “Due to severe weather customers are advised not to travel today as services are likely to be subject to significant delays and short notice alterations or cancellations.”
