North Berwick Sporting Memories group celebrated its first anniversary last week with wine, a buffet and a quiz created by one of the members.

Sporting Memories was founded in 2011 by Chris Wilkins, from Dirleton, to help older people connect and reminisce through the power of sport.

Mr Wilkins was originally inspired to find a way to support older people who were facing challenges in later life, be it living with dementia or long-term conditions, depression or simply being isolated and lonely.

The very first Sporting Memories Club was founded in East Lothian and the charity has since spread throughout Scotland, England and Wales, with more than 100 clubs hosting weekly sessions online and in person every week.

Mr Wilkins attended the North Berwick club’s birthday celebrations alongside Carol Stobie, from North Berwick Coastal Connections; Douglas Paul, North Berwick Rugby Club manager; and former West Ham and Hibernian footballer Neil Orr.

The group, in addition to general chat on sport and many other light-hearted topics, has enjoyed quizzes, physical exercise, walking football and guest speakers.

During the year, it has also attended many other activities, including Fringe by the Sea, Golf in Society and a number of concerts.

The club meets every Tuesday from 1.30pm to 3pm at North Berwick Rugby Club.
