STAMPS from 1966 to the present day are at the heart of a new online Advent calendar.

Longniddry Parish Church launches its ‘Mystery Advent Calendar’ on the congregation’s website tomorrow (Friday).

The idea is a simple one, according to the Rev Robin Hill, Church of Scotland minister of Gladsmuir linked with Longniddry.

He said: “In an age when commercial Advent calendars seem to be more to do with chocolate and toys, the Mystery Advent Calendar is all about engaging with the true message of Christmas.”

For 2023’s calendar, Mr Hill received permission from Royal Mail to feature 24 UK Christmas stamps from 1966 to the present day.

The stamps cover six Christian topics: light, angels, Mary and Joseph, shepherds, wise men and carol singing.

The minister added: “I always like to challenge our guests each year, giving everyone a target to reach by December 24.

“This December, daily visitors will be given the task of counting the number of times Mary the mother of Jesus appears from start to finish.

“The whole thing is just for fun, offering families the chance to find the answer together in time for Christmas Day.”
