A MAIN route through Haddington town centre will be closed for two days this month.

Two phases of resurfacing works are planned for Market Street in the coming weeks.

The first phase gets under way on Thursday (November 16) and will see parking restrictions in place from 6pm to 11pm on both the Thursday and the following day. On Saturday and Sunday (November 18 and 19), restrictions will be in place 8am-5pm.

A spokesperson for East Lothian Council stressed that the road would remain open and buses would operate as usual, although the junction at Newton Port would also be closed, with a diversion in place.

The second phase of works will close Market Street entirely from Newton Port to the junction of Hardgate and Victoria Terrace from 8am to 5pm on November 25 and 26.

A council spokesperson said: “Upon completion of the resurfacing works, all carriageway markings will be reinstated.

“For their own safety, pedestrians should not enter the works area.

“Please note that, during the resurfacing works, the existing surface will be sprayed with a black bituminous emulsion which becomes very sticky.

“Please be aware (and make other family members aware) that this material should be avoided as it will readily stick to soles of footwear, bicycle tyres, pets’ paws, etc, and is difficult to remove.”

East Coast Buses will not service Market Street during this time but will remain active on High Street.

Other bus service operators may not service Market Street during this time and users should consult the operator directly for up-to-date information.
