The public are being asked to help clear the county’s beaches of plastic after the impact of recent storms.

East Lothian Countryside Rangers have been trying to rid the coastline of rubbish following the bad weather, with a spokesperson calling the volume of plastic found as “unbelievable”.

Litterpickers and bags have been placed at the entrance paths to Gullane, Yellowcraig and North Berwick’s  beaches for the public to use.

A spokesperson for the Rangers said: “Another devastating impact of the recent storms is that an unbelievable amount of plastic has washed in to our beaches. It’s so hard to appreciate the levels from the photos, you really have to see it for yourself to believe it.

“We have been out as a team and with our volunteers to tackle the worst beaches, and will continue to do so. We have also seen members of the public out picking, and we really appreciate the help! But there is just so much they we can’t tackle it alone.

“We are asking that if anyone is visiting the beaches, please could you help?

“We have left litterpickers and bags at the entrance paths to Gullane, Yellowcraig and North Berwick beaches, but will be adding other sites next week. Bags of litter (from beach collection only) can be left beside the post with the pickers and we will uplift them.

“You can spend as long or as little time as you can spare. It’s not all about picking the big items, collecting the really small pieces has a huge impact as well. It all goes towards helping the situation.

“We thank you all in advance and would love to see some of the photos of you helping out! You can email them to us at ranger@eastlothian.gov.uk and please let us know if you’re happy for us to share them on social media.

“Please also get in touch if you would like to help as a larger group and we can arrange for more litterpickers to be dropped to you.”
