A PERSON has died after being hit by a train near Longniddry.

A number of emergency service vehicles are on the scene and there is a stationary LNER train on the track near the village station.

LNER said on social media: "It is with great sadness that we report that a person has been hit by a train between Edinburgh and Newcastle. Services are subject to delays when passing in the surrounding area."

The line has now reopened, but ScotRail has confirmed that services are unable to call at Longniddry. 

Routes affected are: ScotRail between Edinburgh and North Berwick/Dunbar; CrossCountry between Edinburgh and Bristol Temple Meads/Plymouth; Lumo between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross; LNER between Inverness/Aberdeen/Edinburgh and London Kings Cross; and TransPennine Express between Edinburgh and Berwick-upon-Tweed.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to the line near Longniddry railway station just before 12.30pm today (Monday), following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file has been prepared for the procurator fiscal."

Police Scotland have been approached for comment.
