A HADDINGTON motorist has been banned from the road after he was caught more than five times the drink-drive limit.

Colin Wood crashed his vehicle into a roundabout after driving at excessive speeds at the B6363 road near Gladsmuir on April 30.

Wood, of the town’s Hardgate, continued to drive on after colliding with the roundabout before losing control of his car for a second time and crashing through a hedge.

He then came to a stop in a ploughed field and was spotted attempting to reverse unsuccessfully from the field during the incident.

Police were alerted and, when officers arrived on the scene, a breath test proved the motorist had 112mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 22mg.

Wood pleaded guilty to the drink-driving charge, along with an offence of driving without due care and attention, when he appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last week.

Sheriff John Cook issued the 39-year-old with a total fine of £940 and banned him from driving for 32 months.

The sheriff said that he would allow Wood to take part in the drink-drive rehabilitation course, which, if completed successfully, will see his ban reduced by one quarter.
