HUNDREDS of trees could be planted near a village's bowling club under new proposals.

West Barns Community Council has backed a project, which would see about a hectare of grassland near the village’s bowling club transformed.

The idea came from Dr Judy Greenwood, who has already been in discussions with Mike Foy, East Lothian Council’s tree officer.

It is thought the area could take about 2,000 saplings.

Both West Barns Primary School and Belhaven Hill School could be involved in the project.

An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: “We were approached by a local resident about the possibility of a tree planting initiative in West Barns.

"While we are keen to explore this further, discussions about a potential project are at a very early stage and there will need to be further engagement with local groups/stakeholders regarding possible options before this can proceed further.”
