Mr Muir, known as the ‘father of the National Parks’ and ‘John of the Mountains’, was born in Dunbar on April 21, 1838, and developed a love of the natural world.

That passion was the base for a lifelong journey of exploration, revelation, hardship and wonder.

His introduction to Yosemite Valley, California, resulted in his campaign to preserve wilderness for wilderness’ sake and led to the establishment of the world’s first national park system.

Born at the property next door which now a museum, John Muir's Birthplace, dedicated to the naturalist, Mr Muir moved to the now for-sale property at about two years old, where he stayed until he was 10.
