Tranent’s gala queen and consort cut the ribbon to officially open Tranent Wombles’ Pollinator Parklet, on Lindores Drive on Saturday.

Esmae Davies and Peter McLelland officially opened the green space created by the volunteers, which has been accessible to the public for a couple of months, on Saturday.

Tranent Wombles, who keep Tranent’s streets free from litter, have now completed work in the area, and the small flowerbed is fully planted.

Henry Mathias, chair of Tranent Wombles, said: “Here at the Wombles we’re buzzing about this opening.

“The planting has been a huge collective effort and the Wombles would like to thank the kids and organisations from across the community, who all got stuck in helping to make it happen.”

Henry highlighted plans for similar spaces across Tranent.

He said: “We’ve been delighted with how well the space has been used. The kids love jumping along the wee stumps we have put in, and the bench is well used, too.

“Now that it is complete we will hold discussions and look at other areas where we could open a similar space.”

Mike Falconer, chair of Tranent and Elphinstone Community Council said: “I am delighted at how successful the area has been. It is a real credit to the Wombles for getting it done.

“The work they do for Tranent, and all on a voluntary basis, is fantastic and I am so grateful to them.”

Lee-Anne Menzies, ward councillor for Tranent, Wallyford and Macmerry, said: "I had such an uplifting afternoon at the opening of Tranent Wombles parklet.

WHenry from the Wombles updated us all on the amazing work they’ve done since forming, during lockdown.

"Tranent is a great community and everything the Wombles do, makes us all the better.

"I want to say a massive congratulations to all involved and thanks to everyone that worked so hard to make it happen."
