A SPECIAL cake marking the 150th anniversary of Innerwick Flower Show has been cut by the village’s oldest resident.

Jean Higgins, 97, was given the honour of cutting the cake at the show, which took place on Saturday.

Norma Watt, who is stepping down as chairperson of the organising committee, told the Courier the event had proven a success.

She said: “I was really, really pleased with the fruit and vegetables and the flowers.

“We heard folk leading up to the show saying ‘this is not happening’ or ‘that’s not happening’ or something is not going to be flowering at that time but on the day it was absolutely great. For a closed show, I think it was fantastic.

“Also, the baking section, the table was laden with real quality baking and there were names that used to compete 10 or 15 years ago and they were coming back.

“They were coming back and putting up the challenge to the younger bakers.”

All those in attendance were offered a piece of the cake, which had been baked for the historic occasion.

A wealth of fruit, vegetables and baked items were on display, with judges facing the difficult decision of picking out winners.

Mrs Watt felt the time had come for a new committee to take the event forward.

She said: “I have always enjoyed it but why I am stepping down this year is I think we need new folk.

“We need younger folk, we need brighter ideas, but also trying to retain some of the old stuff that keeps the more mature people interested.”
