A DESIRE to preserve and protect a well-known monument – a treasured symbol of Prestonpans – has been expressed by members of the town’s community council.

Preston Market Cross is a traditional market cross, built in 1617 to serve as a centre point of the “bustling town of Preston”.

It is one of five that existed across Scotland, and the only one that still sits in its original location.

It was discussed at a Prestonpans Community Council meeting and it was mooted that a group could be formed to help protect and preserve the monument.

Community councillors suggested it may be time to “put pressure” on Historic Environment Scotland (which owns the site) to source funding to preserve the scheduled monument for future generations.

The group has seen success in bringing about the ongoing renovation and preservation works at Preston Tower and felt it was also prudent to explore options for another heritage site in the town.

A spokesperson for Historic Environment Scotland (HES) said: “We would be happy to meet with the local community council to discuss Preston Cross and the wider work of HES in the area, and will be reaching out to the group to start this discussion.”
