Preston Lodge High School has bade farewell to five long-standing and "much-loved" members of staff.

Jan Ainslie, Jenni Ewan, Jeni Allan, Elaine Cargill and Catherine Dods are all leaving having spent a combined 83 years at PL.

Jan Ainslie, of PT Languages, had been with the school for 27 years.

In her time with PL, she had a significant influence on the culture, ethos and outlook of the school.

The school stressed that she leaves a "real legacy" behind her as "her determination, intelligence, good humour and optimism have all helped thousands of students to achieve impressive achievements in English and, in turn, many other subjects."

Jenni Ewan is also saying farewell, retiring after 21 years at Preston Lodge as a mathematics teacher.

Jenni is described as "an incredibly patient, supportive and inclusive teacher" to which students have benefitted from her focused and determined approach to helping achieve their best.

Jeni Allan is leaving after 19 years at the school, in Biology, and as PT Classroom Practice.

Jeni also led the school's approach to learning, developed a PL Learning Cycle, and led the Strategic Learning Group, which introduced the PL Learning Festival.

For the past 18 months Jeni has been on secondment at Peebles High School and she has achieved a permanent position there now.

Elaine Cargill has been a stalwart of PL's physics teaching team for 10 years, and leaves Preston Lodge this summer to take up new opportunities at North Berwick High School.

A PLer through and through, being a former pupil, parent and teacher, Elaine came into teaching via time as an accountant, and her love of science, and infectious enthusiasm for her subject has supported many students to succeed over the years.

Catherine Dods has been a member of the English teaching team for six years but will now leave for Broughton High School in Edinburgh.

Catherine has been "a great servant to our school, and we thank her, and wish her well as she embarks on a new chapter in her life."

The school is also saying goodbye to a number of staff who have been with the school for a shorter while.

A spokesperson for PL said: "We also say goodbye today to a number of staff who have only been with us for a short while.

"Katherine Frost leaves for a History post at Cults Academy, Emma Turnbull is headed for a Home Economics post at Dunbar Grammar School, and chemist Rebecca Blakeman heads off to pastures new in Australia.

"We have been so pleased to have had these highly effective staff with us at PL.

"All will be missed, and all have made a positive contribution to our school community.

"They, of course, remain PLers, wherever they go, and we look forward to catching up with them in the future. Keep in touch!"
