LEGO lovers are in for an awesome weekend as the National Museum of Flight's brick-building event returns to the county.

Awsome Bricks takes place on Saturday and Sunday, June 17 and 18 at the museum in East Fortune and will allow master builders to let their creative minds run free.

The two-day event will offer hands-on fun including the chance for visitors to design, build and race their own LEGO vehicle, navigate a LEGO train down a special track and assemble their own creation in a Brick Build Zone filled with more then 80,000 bricks.

Families can take part in a mass participation mosaic, helping LEGO experts Warren and Teresa Elsmore construct a giant image of one of the first powered aircraft to take to the air – a 1907 Voisin biplane.

Visitors will also be able to see the detailed models and tiny worlds that have been created by LEGO creators from across the UK and Europe including a rotating space station, futuristic flying machines, a Middle Eastern fort and market and a model of the Wright Brothers biplane.

There will also be something for younger visitors who can hone their building skills with bigger bricks in the DUPLO Play and Display area and can hunt for the Flying Wonders Minifigures that are hidden across the museum site.

Steve McLean, general manager, National Museum of Flight said: “The fantastic LEGO displays and fun-filled challenges included in our Awesome Bricks event are a great way to encourage children’s problem solving and engineering talents and to allow them to be innovative and creative.

"Combined with the chance to learn about flight and see the magnificent aircraft in our collections, this event offers a wonderful day out that the whole family can enjoy together.”

All of the other attractions at the National Museum of Flight will be available to enjoy alongside the Awesome Bricks event including iconic aircraft such as a Red Arrows Hawk and Scotland’s Concorde.

Families can also visit the Museum’s Fantastic Flight gallery with its interactive displays offering a wonderful way to discover how aeroplanes fly.

There is also a chance to learn about East Fortune’s wartime heritage in the attraction’s Fortunes of War exhibition.

Food and drink will be available from both the Aviator café and The Wee Green Hut, which will serve a selection of wood-fired pizzas, hot drinks, cake and bakes.

The Awesome Bricks event runs from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 June.

Due to event capacity, advance booking is required to ensure entry.

Adults are £15, concessions are £13 and children (5-15) are £10 while under 5’s go free.
