MORE than 450 children have enjoyed a try-mendous time at an annual rugby competition.

Dunbar RFC’s annual minis tournament saw hundreds of youngsters take part in the fun event at Hallhill Sports Centre last Sunday.

Youngsters, from P3-P7, from across East Lothian, Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders played mini versions of the game and were presented with medals from former Scotland international Megan Gaffney and rising stars Faye Sutherland and Eve Cowe.

After playing qualifying rounds, semi-finals and finals, winning teams were crowned: Primary 3 – Haddington: Primary 4 – North Berwick; Primary 5 – Dunbar; Primary 6 – Dunbar; and, finally, the Primary 7 winners were Haddington.

Neil MacPherson, spokesperson for Dunbar Rugby Club, was delighted to say the event, sponsored by Taylor Wimpey East Scotland, was a great success.

He added: “It is really great to have this event back on the fixtures calendar because it’s such a great advert for community sport and families enjoying a great day out together.

“This year’s minis tournament was a great success with an excellent turnout of support for the children involved in the matches.

“We were thrilled to have Taylor Wimpey East Scotland as our main sponsor for this event, as well as a representative from the Scotland Rugby women’s team, Megan Gaffney (45 caps), along with U18 Scotland representatives Faye Sutherland and Eve Cowe, here to present every child who had taken part receive a medal.

“Everyone looked very proud of their achievements whether they won or lost.

“The club enjoys fantastic support from its sponsors, volunteers, coaches, referees, parents and most importantly the children who ensure that the tournament remains a great success each year!”
