A POLICE investigation has been launched into a fire which caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Firefighters were called out on Monday evening to find 1,000 bales of hay ablaze beside the A1.

The fire, beside Spott Roundabout at Dunbar, could be seen throughout the town and surrounding villages.

Now, Police Scotland are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesperson said: “Police Scotland are appealing for witnesses following a report of hay bales being set on fire in a field adjacent to the A1 at Spott Roundabout, Dunbar, around 8.30pm on Monday.

“If you have any information or dashcam footage, please contact 101 quoting incident 3874 of May 8.”

Firefighters were on the scene for more than 24 hours.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that there were no casualties, with the fire service finally standing down at about 9.25pm on Tuesday.

They said: “We were alerted at 8.40pm on Monday to reports of bales of hay being alight at Spott Road, Dunbar.

“Operations Control immediately mobilised four appliances and specialist equipment to the scene.”

Councillor Donna Collins, who represents the Dunbar and East Linton ward and lives near Innerwick, estimated that the cost of the damage could be tens of thousands of pounds.
