Musselburgh Crusaders Riding Club has a new captain.
Sarah Hawes, née Millar, who was Honest Lass in 1997 with Honest Lad Alex Cavers, has succeeded Gary Neill, the 2014 Honest Lad, who presented her with the captain’s sash at the past captains’ dinner at the Ravelston House Hotel.
Musselburgh Crusaders Riding Club was formed in 1937, two years after the 1935 Riding of the Marches and one year after the formation of Musselburgh Honest Toun’s Association.
Each year during the Musselburgh Festival week in July, the club organises the Monday Crusaders chase.
This year the chase will be led by Sarah, an experienced horsewoman who joined the club in 1989 at the age of 13 and has ridden in most festivals since then.
She said she was “delighted” to be appointed to this position and would do her “very best” to ensure the ride is a success.
Gary was presented with his past captain’s badge by the longest-serving past captain, George Innes, who was Honest Lad in 1961 and past captain 1965-66.
Margaret Ross, past captain from 1987 to 88, said the Ravelston House Hotel – one of the main sponsors for this year’s Musselburgh Festival – was “a great venue” for the dinner, which was attended by 22 past captains.
