SCHOOLCHILDREN have been busy designing eye-catching posters in a bid to keep youngsters safe near construction sites.

Hundreds of new homes are being built to the west of Haddington, with Letham Mains Primary School at the heart of the development.

Taylor Wimpey East Scotland is among the housebuilders at the site; it asked children at the school to design posters that would remind people of the dangers of playing near any construction site.

National book vouchers were awarded to the youngsters behind the top three designs, with P6 pupil Nerissa Rycabel awarded £25.

Second place went to Eric Rycabel (P6/7), who received a £15 voucher, while Yanis Wong (P6/7) was awarded a £10 voucher for third place.

The standard of entries was so impressive that a further three designs were selected for inclusion on the banner to be displayed at the development, and the children who created those posters were each awarded a £10 national book voucher.

Deryck Schendel, regional health and safety advisor for Taylor Wimpey in Scotland, highlighted the importance of keeping safe.

He said: “Health and safety in and around our construction areas is so important to Taylor Wimpey.

“As a follow-up activity to our in-school health and safety presentation, our poster challenge is a great way for children to demonstrate what they learned during our visit.”

Bruce Murray, headteacher at Letham Mains Primary School, congratulated the youngsters.

He said: “The designs that feature on the banner for the development are colourful and striking, and we are very proud of our children’s efforts to remind the wider local community never to play near a live construction site.”
