A NEW yoga and cold-water therapy class is starting in North Berwick this month.

Soulful Sunday launches at West Beach this Sunday.

The group is led by a qualified yoga instructor and mixes yoga with a swim in the sea to help relaxation and improve safety in cold water.

Launched by Natalie Valenti in 2021, Soulful Sunday has made its way to beaches throughout the country, including in Portobello, Aberdour and Luss.

Natalie, from North Lanarkshire, said it was an easy decision to begin classes in North Berwick.

She said: “Our ambition is to have classes on every beach in the UK.

“North Berwick is a beautiful area with a lot of amazing locals and amazing tourists.

“We are hoping that we will be able to attract both to our classes.

“Those taking part will be able to do some yoga with an experienced instructor and then get into the water for a swim.

“When I started these classes, it was just me and a few friends. But now it has grown substantially and we usually get about 50 people at each class.

“Hopefully that is the same in North Berwick too.”

Natalie said that her classes were not only therapeutic but also helped encourage water safety.

She said: “I think some people forget how the body reacts to cold water.

“You go into a state of shock and freeze up.

“Breathing is essential to help calm the body down. We teach that at these classes.

“East Lothian is surrounded by beaches and water. Water safety is important for people and, while the main goal is to be a therapy class, we are helping people with vital breathing exercises too.

“We hope to see lots of people come along to our classes.”

Soulful Sunday classes will run at West Beach on April 9, May 7 and June 4, with a view to extending dates if classes are well attended.
