The prospect of North Berwick benefitting financially from wind farm developments in East Lothian has been discussed by North Berwick Community Council (NBCC).

The topic was raised at its February meeting, when details of a new East Lothian Community Benefits Fund (ELCBF) were discussed.

The fund has been proposed by the Association of East Lothian Community Councils (AELCC) and would see local communities benefit from the energy production and infrastructure of new developments.

It has been proposed that directly affected communities would be entitled to receive up to 60 per cent of the funds, with the remaining 40 per cent being shared among other parts of East Lothian.

Kenny Miller, chair of NBCC, described the offer as “remarkable” and detailed how the fund could pay out around “half a million pounds a year” to county communities.

He said: “It’s a rather remarkable offer, there are no guarantees, but remarkable.

“What I have agreed is that we will look at how it works.”

The plans remain in their infancy but Mr Miller asked community councillors to think about what priorities they would like to see this money help fund in the area.
