THE new man at the helm of Dunbar’s Sea Cadet unit is hopeful that his “enthusiasm and pragmatism” will push the group forward.
Petty Officer (SCC) Colin Docherty took charge of TS Valiant at the beginning of the year, after colleague Martin Galloway stepped down.
The group, which was founded nearly 70 years ago, aims to help young people become confident and resilient, and to thrive in the world after they leave school.
Mr Docherty paid tribute to his outgoing colleague, who was in the role for more than four years.
The new officer in charge said: “Martin has been a key driver in the survival of TS Valiant during and after Covid, not only retaining and gaining cadets over this difficult period but also enthusiastically recruiting new volunteers.
“I joined in mid-2020 during a period when there were still strict Covid restrictions, yet Martin was able to support me with my training and jump through Covid restrictions to make sure that sea cadets were one of the first youth organisations to return in East Lothian.
“I hope that my enthusiasm and pragmatism will empower our team to see TS Valiant move successfully through its next phase, and I’m looking forward to seeing Martin’s future impact both at district level and in his new role as a staff training advisor.”
Mr Galloway took on the role in August 2018 after taking command from Petty Officer (SCC) Michael Kaszuba.
The role marked a milestone for Mr Galloway, who was a sea cadet at TS Valiant nearly 20 years ago, before moving south of the Border.
He said: “I have really enjoyed being in command of TS Valiant – it is special to me as it was where I grew up as a sea cadet.
“The past four years have seen cadet numbers nearly double and we have a healthy waiting list.
“This is absolutely a reflection on the team around me – all volunteers who give of their time to offer a brilliant cadet experience.
“I am stepping aside to pursue my own career within the sea cadets and am delighted that Petty Officer (SCC) Colin Docherty will assume command.”
Pippa Swan, who chaired the unit management team throughout Martin’s tenure, wished him well.
She said: “Martin has been a wonderful commanding officer who has been instrumental in building both the cadet and staff base.
“He has left the unit in great shape and will continue to offer support to PO Docherty as he makes the transition into the command position.”
