Homes across the county have been experiencing a surge in damp and mould as some residents feel forced to keep their heating off due to the cost of living crisis and high energy bills.

At this week's meeting of Prestonpans Community Council, Preston Seton Gosford ward councillors Colin Yorkston and Lachlan Bruce highlighted the problem.

NHS Scotland has warned against the negative effects of having damp and mould in homes, causing increased risk of respiratory problems, allergies and asthma.

Mr Yorkston described an example in which one council tenant in the Preston Seton Gosford ward's home was "colder inside than outside".

The resident was concerned that they would build up a large energy bill if she was to turn the heating on.

Mr Bruce added: "Lots of people are struggling because of the rising energy prices due to the war in Ukraine but there are schemes available to help people so please do reach out to your local councillor if you need help doing that."

Homes are less likely to suffer from damp and mould if they are kept warm, are ventilated, and the amount of moisture released into the air is minimised.

Councillors stressed that support for residents living with damp or mould or other issues related to cost of living is available through the winter edition of the Cost of Living leaflet, including information about the new East Lothian Energy Fund.
