AN EMERGENCY closure of the main road into Cockenzie and Port Seton from the south has taken place.
The B6371 – from the Meadowmill roundabout to the Alder Road roundabout – has been blocked off to vehicles and is not scheduled to reopen until January 1.
This is the main route in and out of the village from the A1.
The incident has been declared by council officials as an "emergency" due to subsidence related to adjacent Coal Authority works.
East Lothian Council closed the road, in the interest of safety, under the Road Traffic Act 1984 which gives powers to regulate or restrict traffic on UK roads.
Cockenzie and Port Seton can still be accessed via the B1348 coast road and also Fishergate Road to the east.
An East Lothian Council spokesperson said: "Following further Coal Authority investigatory works, it is necessary to temporarily close the B6371 road between the Meadowmill and Alder Road roundabouts.
"A diversion is being put in place.
"We will press for repairs to be undertaken so the road can re-open as quickly as possible."
