WORK has begun to create a green garden space in a small area of Tranent, designed by Tranent Wombles and using funding from Fa’side Area Partnership.

‘Pollinator Parklet’ will be sited on a small green space opposite Lindores Drive and will become a garden area for the public to enjoy.

A path has been put in place and there are also plans to install a bench.

Reuse Scotland, based in Dunbar, has donated bench ends which will provide the base for the proposed bench.

The green space is currently being worked on by East Lothian Council, funded by part of a £3,000 donation to the Wombles by the area partnership in September.

In addition to the Pollinator Parklet renovation, the funding is also being used by the Wombles to buy more equipment, signs and litter bins.

The garden plans will see the space initially rotovated with soil improver.

Following this will be some autumn tree planting, focusing on native, low-maintenance species.

Plans to plant flowers in the garden will be put into action in spring next year.

Tranent Wombles is a voluntary group of individuals who pick up litter in and around Tranent.

The group has picked up more than 1,200 bags of litter in 2022 so far.

Alison Brown, from Tranent Wombles, said: “We are delighted to see work beginning on the area.

“It’s been a long time coming but we’re really happy with the progress that has been made so far.

“These little green pockets can be a lifeline for wildlife and pollinators, and bring joy to humans too.

“We hope that once this parklet is built we can work on expanding into other areas, creating small green spaces all over Tranent and beyond for people to enjoy.

“We’re very grateful to the area partnership and to East Lothian Council for helping make this parklet a reality.

“We want to engage people in wider conversations about the environment.

“Everyone has a role to play, whether they are in the countryside or urban areas.

“We just want to make Tranent a nicer, greener place to live.”
