NORTH Berwick's annual fireworks display will not be returning this year after organisers confirmed they were "not in a position" to host it.

The event has traditionally taken place at North Berwick Harbour, arranged by East Lothian Yacht Club (ELYC) with financial contributions from other groups such as the community council.

Like many public events, it was last held before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The yacht club has now confirmed to the Courier, in a short statement, that the display would not be returning this year.

It said: "Unfortunately the club won't be in a position to host a fireworks display this year.

"However, we hope to have plans in place for next year."

Judy Lockhart-Hunter, chair of North Berwick Community Council (NBCC), shared her disappointment of the event's cancellation and hoped it would be back next year.

She said: "It is disappointing that there will be no display in North Berwick this year but, as with many similar events which take place in the town, they are reliant on volunteers to arrange them.

"ELYC has worked hard to put on this magical event for so many years and we really hope it can come back next year.

"Things are no longer simple when arranging events: you need East Lothian Council as well as insurance approval; NBCC arrange a number of local events and we fully appreciate the time commitment that these things require.

"NBCC always donated money to ELYC towards the cost of fireworks and we have this money aside which we hope can go towards a display next year."
