A new initiative has been introduced at parkrun events in East Lothian and across the world to encourage people of all fitness levels to get involved with the group.

Parkwalk was introduced this month at parkruns including Meadowmill parkrun and Lochend Woods parkrun in Dunbar.

The new initiative sees a separate run taking place, where participants walk the 5km distance rather than running it.

Walking has always been allowed at the event but it is hoped that the introduction of parkwalk will encourage more people to come and walk on a Saturday.

Andy Murray, event organiser at Meadowmill parkrun, said: “Walking is a great way of soaking up the parkrun atmosphere, getting the opportunity to chat to people, being active and is something that whole families or friendship groups can do together.

“It’s also one of the best entry points into parkrun, especially for those who may be taking their first steps towards healthier and happier lifestyles.

“It is hoped this initiative will be particularly useful for individuals with mental health issues or learning disabilities.”

Andy said that he hoped this new initiative would encourage even more people to get involved with the event at weekends.

He said: “At Meadowmill parkrun, we would like to encourage more people to experience the joy and incredible benefits of walking at parkrun.

“Walking can help you manage or prevent health conditions, enhance your mood, boost fitness and bring you into contact with some amazing places and people.

“We actively support as many people as possible to walk and we have dedicated volunteers who do just that.

“Every parkrun event across the world has at least one volunteer tail walker, who is the person or people at the back who always finish last.

“We will also offer an additional parkwalker volunteer, who can lead and support a group of individuals complete the 5km course at a gentle pace.”

Meadowmill parkrun was started in 2019 and takes place every Saturday at Meadowmill Park, near Prestonpans, while Lochend Woods parkrun also started in 2019 and also takes place every Saturday at Hallhill Sports Centre, Dunbar.

The next parkruns at both sites take place this Saturday at 9.30am.
