FOUR members of Haddington Tennis Club have got on their bikes to serve up an ace fundraising total.

Irene Clark was joined by Yvette Smalridge, Anne Marie Grufferty and Lynne Swan in demonstrating pedal power as they covered 15 miles in the county.

Together, they raised £1,325, with the money going to the Jamie King Urological Cancer Research Fund.

Irene, 70, was joined by husband Bruce in handing over the cheque to staff at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh last month.

She said: “I absolutely cannot get over how kind people are.

“It is tremendous.”

The cycle took the quartet from Haddington to Samuelston before heading north towards Gladsmuir.

The group then crossed the A1 before heading towards Elvingston and on to Longniddry before returning to Haddington.

Irene said: “My husband had prostate cancer.

“I thought I would like to do something and asked the girls from the tennis club if they wanted to come and cycle with me. They said yes and thought it was a great cause.

“One of the girls is really into cycling and did the route for us.”

One in eight men will get prostate cancer and those over 50 or with a history of the condition in the family are at an even higher risk.

Irene, who lives in Haddington, encouraged men to get checked for prostate cancer from the age of 50.
