UNDER One Roof has launched its full programme for this year’s Doors Open Day festival, which will give visitors the chance to enjoy much of the county’s built heritage.

The charity supports tenement owners by helping individuals and communities keep their tenement buildings standing strong by providing free information about building maintenance, management and sustainability.

The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Standing Strong’, which will highlight the value of regular building maintenance and community approaches to looking after buildings and places.

It will also examine the challenges of retrofitting buildings to address the climate emergency and achieve net-zero carbon emission targets.

Six sites across East Lothian are participating in the festival, giving residents the chance to explore and learn more about some of the county’s most historic buildings.

Dunbar Town House, Museum and Gallery; MacArthurs Store, Dunbar; Newhailes House and Gardens, Musselburgh; National Museum of Flight at East Fortune; and Preston Tower gardens (partially opened due to ongoing restoration) and Prestongrange Museum, Prestonpans, will all be open to visitors.

The festival takes place on September 24 and 25, and Mike Heffron, chief executive of Under One Roof Scotland, was delighted to welcome the programme.

He said: “It’s fantastic to launch this year’s full festival programme.

“Under One Roof hopes that visitors are excited to explore their local communities, find new festival favourites, and have the chance to learn more about creating sustainable places and spaces in Scotland.”

The festival also takes place in Edinburgh, with 64 more buildings, tours and events to get involved with.

This will all centre around the Festival Hub, located at the Summerhall events venue in the city centre.
