Tranent Amateur Swimming Club has been named a Club of the Year 2022 finalist by Scottish Swimming.

The award recognises clubs for their commitment to the community and inclusion, and gives clubs an opportunity to show the work they have put in over the year to support their members. Applicants are asked to submit a short video showcasing why they feel they should receive the award, with the winners being chosen by a panel of judges.

Ross Mathieson, 33, head coach of the club, said: “It would be massive to win it: everyone at the club has worked really hard over the past couple of years throughout and after Covid.

“We have tried to create an environment where everyone can learn and develop their swimming and make this the best place possible for kids in the community.”

The club has just over 100 members of all ages, with many swimmers joining after lockdown, which saw a depletion in members.

Ross said: “I don’t know the other clubs that well but from their videos they seem to have worked really hard as well. Just making the top three is an achievement for us, so if we win that would be great but, if not, I’m sure whatever club does will have deserved it.”

The awards night takes place at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh on September 24.

The winning club will be presented with a trophy, £300 of Scottish Swimming education vouchers and a club visit from an Olympic or Paralympic athlete.

The second and third place clubs will be presented with an award certificate and £200 of Scottish Swimming education vouchers.

The other finalists are Aberdeen Dolphin Swimming Club and Cupar & District Swimming Club.
