THOUSANDS of Guides, Rangers and leaders from across the world have come together for a special camp.

Eighteen youngsters from Dunbar enjoyed archery, sailing, go-karting, clay pigeon shooting and more during a memorable week-long jamboree.

Guides and Scouts from throughout the UK were joined by visitors from as far afield as the Netherlands, Canada and the USA at the Lincolnshire Showground.

The ‘Poacher’ camp usually runs every four years and was attended by nearly 6,000 young people, with thousands more adult leaders and volunteers.

The county youngsters, aged from 11 to 17, joined in with a range of activities, with traditional campfires ruled out due to the prolonged dry weather in the area.

A spokesperson for the group said: “Plenty of onsite daily entertainments with a funfair, air displays and nightly discos, then fireworks to end the closing ceremony.

“The cold showers weren’t quite as popular.

“We had our own wee health tent for communal teeth brushing and sun cream application as several days were hot and sunny.”

Five volunteer leaders made the trip south, with the girls free to roam the large site and enjoy different activities, as well as meeting other Guides and Scouts.

The spokeswoman added: “Our menu included fajitas, chicken teriyaki with noodles, pasta Bolognese and eggy bread, of course – although the girls seemed to visit the onsite ice cream stall and tuck shop a lot as well.

“Each unit camp had a gateway and we won second place on our subcamp.

“Our seaside-themed gateway had two creels from Dunbar Harbour, bunting made with the Rebellious Threads group, crocheted seaweed, balloon lobsters, netting and fabric fish.

“Many thanks to Dunbar Community Council, East Lothian Council’s area partnership, the Dolphin Inn and Zero Waste for financial help, fundraising and kit, making this amazing opportunity accessible.

“We have brought home fond memories and a load of washing, with huge thanks to Girlguiding and the Scouts for holding such a fantastic event.

“Girlguiding East Lothian welcomes new volunteers to help our young members experience adventures and trips just like this.”
