A DUNBAR woman who carried out an assault at her home and also spat towards a police officer in a separate incident has avoided jail.

Zoe Hill assaulted Chloe Barrance by pushing the woman to the body, causing her to fall to the ground, on September 2, 2020.

Hill then repeatedly struck her victim to the head during the attack at her home on the town’s Pine Street.

The 26-year-old was then involved in a further incident three weeks later on September 21 where she assaulted PC Jack Tranent by spitting at him during an incident on Lasswade Road, Bonnyrigg.

Hill had previously admitted the offences when she appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last month and was back in the dock on Wednesday for sentencing.

Solicitor Ross Gardner said that his client had had “a hugely problematic upbringing” and had suffered “difficulties in her adult life”.

'On the threshold of custody'

Sheriff Kenneth Campbell said: “I have had the opportunity to read the social work report and heard what Mr Gardner has had to say today.

“These are very serious matters and you are on the threshold of custody.

“But I am impressed with you taking responsibility for these matters and I am prepared to give you an opportunity to continue showing your progress.”

Sheriff Campbell sentenced Hill to a community-based disposal as a direct alternative to a custodial sentence.

Hill was placed on a supervision order for the next two years and told she must comply with any instructions from the social work team to attend counselling sessions.

She was also ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work in the community over the next 18 months.
