ACHIEVEMENTS of budding sports stars have been celebrated at a special awards ceremony.

Ahead of the summer holidays, Dunbar Grammar School held its sports awards evening, with parents and carers in attendance for the first time since before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dozens of prizes were handed out at the evening, which was hosted by the school’s sports ambassadors Morgan Laird and Amy McHardy.

Success both inside and outside the school was recognised at the event.

Paul Sutherland, principal teacher for health and wellbeing, said: “There were a number of sporting achievements from students out of school that we are so proud of.

“We have recently introduced our international category and were able to recognise the achievements of five of our young people for their international success.

“This was fantastic to do.

“These students have put in a huge amount of hours on top of school to ensure they are at the highest level possible.”

The school has had a very successful year at county sporting events, winning the Willie Innes Youth Games, cross-country championships and county sports.

Staff wanted to celebrate the achievements and recognise the efforts and commitment students had shown.

The achievements of athletics champions – S1 to senior boys and girls who accumulated the most points from the events they entered on sports day – were marked.

Chris Laidlaw, formerly the school’s rugby development officer and now working with the SRU as an academy coach, was guest speaker and the audience also enjoyed musical performances, including by S5 pupil Hannah Swinney.

The evening ended with the presentation of the S1 to senior sports person of the year awards.

The accolade is based on students’ attitude towards physical education (PE), extra-curricular involvement, as well as overall character within the subject seen by PE staff.

Mr Sutherland added: “Overall it was a fantastic night. Parents and carers were delighted to be back in the building attending an event like this.

“From our point of view, it was incredible to celebrate the inspiring sporting achievements of our students. We are so proud of them all.”
