A COUNTY charity has launched a new mass-participation cycling event to raise money for the services it provides.

Leuchie House, near North Berwick, has announced the Big East Lothian Cycle in collaboration with True Grit events to give budding cyclists the chance to raise cash for charity.

Leuchie House is Scotland’s national respite centre, providing breaks and short holidays for people living with neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis or motor neurone disease.

Three-hundred cyclists will be able to enter the 50-mile route that will take in iconic East Lothian scenery, starting at Leuchie before heading to Gifford, Garvald and eventually back towards North Berwick on August 28.

A smaller and gentler route will also be available for riders eager to raise money for Leuchie.

Mark Bevan, CEO for Leuchie House, was delighted to welcome the return of face-to-face events at the centre for the first time since the successful Big Hare Trail during lockdown.

He said: “We loved bringing the Big Hare Trail, along with lots of visitors to East Lothian during lockdown – it was a great way to show off our fantastic area and get involved with the wider community including schools, local businesses and, of course, guests’ carers and volunteers.

“On the back of that success, this summer we will bring The Big East Lothian Cycle, a tour of our famous landmarks with excellent local food producers, to entice people from far and wide and with all abilities to enjoy a cycle in company.

“Although much of society is moving on from Covid, like other health care services, Leuchie is still experiencing significant challenges as we meet the regulations which keep our guests and team safe.

“There has been little change for us except a significant increase in cost.

“So, we hope that this event will bring fun and funds!”

The route will see riders start at Leuchie, taking in North Berwick Law, Dirleton Castle and the Golf Coast before heading inland towards Luffness Mains and the Hopetoun Monument.

The course will then take riders towards Haddington and Gifford before venturing into the Lammermuirs and Redstone Rigg, heading downhill towards Whiteadder and eventually back to Leuchie via West Barns.

Arlene Main, fundraising manager at Leuchie, said: “We are delighted to launch our first ever Big East Lothian Cycle and can’t wait for people to sign up.

“The cycle will take in the stunning East Lothian scenery and with two routes available, ensuring there is something for everyone.

“All funds raised from the Big East Lothian Cycle will help Leuchie House provide transformational respite breaks for people living with a neurological condition and a break for their carer too.”
