AN APPEAL has been made for memorabilia for a new exhibition about Musselburgh’s historic mills.
The display, entitled ‘The Mighty Mills of Musselburgh’, is due to open today (Thursday) at Musselburgh Museum on High Street.
It will tell the stories of the town’s three big mills – Bruntons wire, Stuart’s net and Inveresk paper. Items and photos relating to the mills will be on show.
The exhibition is being curated in partnership with East Lothian Council’s archive service and the University of Edinburgh European Ethnological Research Centre, which is undertaking oral history recordings of former mill workers.
Simon Fairnie, of Musselburgh Museum, said: “If former employees have any memorabilia of their time in the mills, the museum would appreciate it if they would lend it for display in the exhibition. If anyone who has stories of the working life in the mills and is willing to tell and have them recorded, please come forward to enhance our local oral history.”
Anyone who can help can call 0131 665 6642 and leave a message on the museum answer machine with their name and contact information, or email simon.fairnie@yahoo.co.uk
The mill exhibition follows a successful display about the Battle of Pinkie Tapestry.
