THOUSANDS of people have flocked to Dunbar to enjoy stunning stone sculptures and natural art.

The European Land Art Festival and Stone Stacking Championships took place in the town last week.

The event, which was founded in 2016, was expanded from a two-day festival, with activities beginning on Monday at locations throughout the town.

James Craig Page, who has been at the heart of the event since it started, was delighted to say it had proven a great success.

James Craig Page was delighted with the success of the European Stone Stacking Championships in Dunbar

He said: “I was absolutely delighted with the way it went.

“The different venues this year really worked, especially at Lochend Woods.

“Belhaven Bay was a wee bit windy but everybody managed and there was a lovely big mandala made at The Ridge Backlands site.

“Everybody was delighted and had a great time.”

The organisers had taken the decision to expand the festivities from a two-day event to a week-long natural art celebration.

Thousands of pounds were raised through an online appeal, with funding also coming from Creative Scotland.

A shop window art trail, along with a sandcastle building competition, took place early in the week before the European Stone Stacking Championships were held over the weekend.

The competition attracted entrants from across the world, with a spot at the Llano Earth Art Festival in Texas up for grabs.

Tim Pugh, from Rhyl in Wales, was crowned the winner ahead of Dunbar’s own Ben Ambrozevich and Brioney McLean, also from Wales.

Mr Page was pleased “Sunny Dunny lived up to its reputation” and was confident that the event would return in 2023 in its weeklong format.

He said: “I think it has proved that the idea works and the town responded very well to it.

“It can only keep growing from now on.

East Lothian Courier:

“We had a really great response and the artists were delighted to be creating in such a beautiful environment.”

A number of artists stayed in the town, with many local shops also benefitting from the increased footfall over the week.

Mr Page added: “All the shops, like the Co-op, have said it has been their best week for a very long time.

“I’m delighted for the traders and the people of Dunbar that will have benefited from it.”
