A BEFRIENDING project has been set up by a Musselburgh-based charity to help promote positive mental health in East Lothian.

The new service, called Well-Connected, is being provided by Changes, which received a £139,316 cash boost from The National Lottery Community Fund (Scotland) – Improving Lives.

The charity, on Market Street, offers free, confidential support to help people achieve and maintain positive mental health.

Its befriending project is being run by Zanjbeel Iqbal, who has recently joined the Changes team after a move from Leeds.

Zanjbeel said that Well-Connected was part of Changes’ new approach to implementing positive mental health in the community, adding: “I am beyond excited to be part of such a rewarding and necessary service.”

“As we know, post Covid-19 pandemic life stressors, isolation and lack of social contact have risen meaning, there is a need to support our community, as well as individuals who may be struggling.

“Well-Connected will match a befriender volunteer with someone from the community, based on like-mindedness and location.

“Together they will go on walks, meet for coffee, chat through Zoom or over the phone.

“By beginning to engage with the community and enjoy building a strong connection, participants will develop their confidence, have more social contact, and positively benefit their wellbeing and mental health.”

She added: “With the community being the driving force for this project, we are looking for support.

“Whether you feel you’ll be confident as a volunteer, or in need of some support, we encourage you to get in touch.”

Musselburgh MSP Colin Beattie has lodged a motion to the Scottish Parliament congratulating Changes on its grant aid success.
