COASTAL rowers from Musselburgh were given “three cheers” as they got ready to travel to the Netherlands to take part in the world championships.

The members of the Eskmuthe Community Rowing Club are being sponsored by Lothian-based Stewart Brewing, which has provided all members taking part in SkiffieWorlds 2022 with a T-shirt.

This is the second coastal rowing world championship that the club has attended, and the first ever to be held outside the UK.

The first rowers left for the Netherlands on Wednesday, towing their boat Steedie Falconer, named after a former Fisherrow fishwife, and are delighted to be taking part in the event. Racing takes place at Kortgene, in the south-west Netherlands, from Monday to next Saturday (July 2).

Regatta captain David Lee said: “This is a huge tournament and more than 60 clubs will be racing at Kortgene.

“We are delighted to be taking 29 rowers to the event to represent Musselburgh and Fisherrow.”

Eskmuthe was formed in August 2013 and its two boats, Honesty and Steedie Falconer, are based at Fisherrow Harbour and can often be seen in local waters, and also travelling for competitions and other rowing events around Scotland and the north of England.

During lockdown, the club hosted a beer-tasting Zoom event with a selection of Stewart Brewing beers.

“One of our members, Craig Scotland, is head brewer at Stewart and suggested he organised a beer tasting evening during the pandemic,” said club chairperson Gaynor Allen.

She added: “We all collected the beers and had a wonderful online event that everyone loved.

“Stewart Brewing then supported a fundraising row-a-thon held by the club to raise money for our boatshed project – and then offered to sponsor our T-shirts. We are delighted to be linked with Stewart Brewing as a successful local business – and hope this continues.”

Jo Stewart, co-founder of Stewart Brewing, said: “Coastal rowing is a great sport for people to get involved in, both competitively and for recreation.

“We are proud to sponsor the Eskmuthe team at the world championships and wish all the local teams heading to the Netherlands good luck in the contest.”

Stewart Brewing is an independent craft brewery based in Loanhead, Midlothian, and was established in 2004 by Steve and Jo Stewart. It produces beer in small batches which are available in about 200 pubs in Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife, the Borders, Glasgow and Newcastle.
