GULLANE Primary School pupils will fly the flag for East Lothian at a prestigious competition in the Scottish Parliament.

Twenty-nine schools from across the country will head to the capital to test their European knowledge.

Euroquiz, which was first held in 1993, sees teams of pupils working together to broaden their knowledge of European history, geography, sport, culture, languages and the European Union.

More than 400 schools have been involved in competing in this year’s quiz.

Ronnie Taylor, headteacher at Gullane Primary School, wished the best of luck to the team representing the school.

He said: “The whole school community is very excited and super proud of our Euroquiz team, Rachel, Sam, Elsa, Anna and Aeden, who will be representing Gullane at the national finals hosted at the Scottish Parliament.

"The children have worked extremely hard, showing real dedication and commitment as a team, and are hoping to match previous winning teams from Gullane.

"Whatever the result, we are extremely proud of their achievement and know that they will be a credit to our community.”

Following a series of heats that took place earlier this year, the winning schools will now compete in the final which takes place in the Scottish Parliament’s Debating Chamber tomorrow (Monday).

Annabelle Ewing MSP, Deputy Presiding Officer and Euroquiz quizmaster, will welcome the P6 pupils.

She said: “I’m delighted to be welcoming young people back to the Parliament for this event, which helps young people to learn more about our European neighbours in a fun and engaging way.

“I’m sure the pupils from all over Scotland have been studying very hard for this final and will be determined to take home the trophy.

“The Euroquiz heats involved more than 2,000 pupils and over 400 schools so it’s great to see the enthusiasm for this competition and I congratulate each and every one of them for reaching the final.”
