AN INAUGURAL sporting competition named after former East Lothian Council leader Willie Innes has been won by Dunbar Grammar School.

The annual East Lothian Secondary Schools Sports Youth Games has taken place for a number of years.

In March, it was decided to rename the event, which takes place at Meadowmill Sports Centre, to the Willie Innes Youth Games.

Mr Innes, who was a councillor for more than 20 years, passed away in October last year.

When the event was renamed, Councillor Norman Hampshire, who succeeded Mr Innes as leader of the local authority, described the move as “a fitting tribute”.

Each of the county’s six secondary schools took part in the competition last Wednesday (June 1).

This year, for the first time, S1 and S2 pupils competed for their school for the Willie Innes Trophy in sports including football, hockey, rugby, badminton, basketball and golf.

Dunbar Grammar School lifted the trophy having won most of the individual categories following an action packed day of competition.

Councillor Innes’ son Craig Innes, who plays for Preston Athletic, and daughter Gillian McEwan attended and presented the trophies to the winners.

East Lothian Provost Councillor John McMillan was also in attendance and said: “The event named in memory of Councillor Willie Innes was a real showcase, with competitors embracing the spirit of the games.

“Willie was a passionate supporter of the opportunities that sport offers for young people and it is therefore very fitting that the games now bear his name and continue his legacy.

“I was delighted to see so many young people enjoying themselves and representing their school in such a positive and respectful manner.
