IT’S the end of an era for a true legend and “heart and soul” of Port Seton as he retires from the village’s community centre after more than two decades.

John Marshall officially retired on Tuesday from the Port Seton Centre, on Seton Park, after providing service at the centre for over 23 years.

Jordan Irvine, community development officer, said: “John has worked at the centre since 1999, serving the community for over 23 years!

“John decided to retire early to enjoy more time with his two dogs Peggy (new puppy) and Isa, and take part in more community activities.

“John is an active member in the community, supporting numerous events and activities including the gala, school camp and supporting families through the resilience groups. John will continue to pop into the centre on a regular basis since he lives a stone’s throw away.”

Port Seton Centre Management Committee is made up of a group of volunteers who either live or work in the Cockenzie and Port Seton area.

Port Seton Centre Management Committee is a registered charity that has taken on the lease of Port Seton Community Centre, which first opened its doors to the public in 1994.

The committee has been established for a number of years and helps support local groups and charities.

'A big loss'

Jordan added: “John has been a key member of the community, throwing himself into the fray to support the numerous groups and activities in the community.

“He will be a big loss to the centre, with many groups praising his dedication to supporting the community.

“Many of the staff and users of the centre will miss John’s humour, which brightens up peoples days.”

Shona Brash, community councillor, said: “Wishes for the happiest of retirements.

“You have been the heartbeat of the centre for decades – above and beyond doesn’t come close to covering your commitment to our community.”

'A ray of sunshine'

Moira Gilfillan, childminder and one of the organisers of a toddler group at the centre, said: “On behalf of everyone at toddlers, thank you for everything that you have done for us over the years.

“You have always been a wee ray of sunshine around the centre and we will all miss you very much.”

A spokesperson for Cockenzie Primary School said: “Thank you John for everything you have done for all the young people in Cockenzie and Port Seton over many, many years. You’re an absolute gem of a human!”

Members of the community also shared their love and thanks to John on the day of his retirement, with one saying: “Enjoy your retirement John.

“You are the heart and soul of the Port Seton Centre and will be sorely missed.

“Wishing you all the best and many, many chilled out years.”
