Longniddry Villa’s under-18s ended a spell of bad form in style to take home the David Murray Cup following a 2-0 victory over Edinburgh South.

The county side headed to Newbattle Complex on Friday, without a win in four against a side that they hadn’t beaten all season and who had already defeated them in the Cruden Bowl semi-final a few weeks before.

The final started in a frantic pace with Villa putting Edinburgh South under heavy pressure from the very start.

The pressure was rewarded when Lewis Allen-Brown grabbed the opener taking the side into half-time with a 1-0 lead.

Edinburgh South immediately got on the front foot at the start of the second half, trying to battle their way back into the game but Longniddry defended well consigning the Edinburgh side to few opportunities on goal.

Five minutes from the end Nathan Graham grabbed the game’s second with a well worked goal as the county side secured victory in the dying moments.

Barry Brown, coach of Villa under-18s, was incredibly proud of the boys’ achievements and lauded their mental strength to get the result in such a massive game.

He said: “To get this win was absolutely brilliant for the lads.

“We had gone four games without a win before – we couldn’t buy a win.

“But we got off to a flyer and were hungry for everything, consigning Edinburgh South to scraps.

“In the second half they came at us hard, but we expected that.

“They lifted themselves massively, getting the second late on to make it comfortable.

“What can words say, I’m massively proud.”

Villa now have the opportunity to take home even more silverware as they face Bonnyrigg Rose Whites in the South East Region Cup final on May 28.
