PRESTONPANS is mourning an "absolute legend" and well-known shop assistant who served one of the town's Scotmid shop for 20 years following her passing.

Tributes have flooded in for Margaret Rodgers, also known by town residents as 'Maggie from the top store', with a Facebook post announcing her death gathering almost 400 comments and more than 1,000 likes in less than 24 hours.

Maggie was a familiar face in the town having worked for Scotmid, on Hawthorn Road, for more than two decades.

The 66-year-old was born and raised in Prestonpans, but left for a brief period of time as a young woman to serve in the army, before settling down in Glasgow for a number of years.

She welcomed her first child, Steven, at the age of 20, which pushed her to return to her beloved town of Prestonpans.

Upon her return, Maggie served the Musselburgh community as a member of staff at the Rainbow Restaurant before welcoming her second child, Lyndsey.

She leaves behind grandson's Dylan, 18, and 14-year-old Josh, with Lyndsey adding: "She was the best Nana ever to them and they loved her so much.

"It was cancer she sadly lost her life too in the end but she was such a fighter.

"I am so glad she is not in pain anymore."

Maggie was diagnosed with lung cancer last November.

Marion Henderson, a former colleague, said: "RIP Maggie, you were an amazing woman.

"I had the pleasure of working with you in Bankton and we had many a laugh.

"My thoughts are with all of your family."

Graeme B Hutchison said: "Such a nice person whom I had the pleasure to work with for a long time, may you rest in peace Margaret, sympathy to the family."

Meanwhile, one Facebook user said: "Condolences to all.

"She was the first welcoming, happy face when I first arrived here six years ago.

"She really welcomed me into the Prestonpans community. RIP lovely lady."

Another said: "So sad and so sorry to hear this.

"Margaret was such a lovely woman.

"All the years I've known her she always had a smile and a hello and I loved our wee chats in the store or when she came in the chippy.

"Thoughts are with you all at this sad time."

A final comment read: "So sorry to hear.

"She was an absoloute legend."

Maggie will pass Scotmid for the final time when her funeral takes place at Seafield Crematorium on May 2 at 1pm.

The community is invited to attend or wave her off from her home or outside the Scotmid store.

A tea will be held at the Prestoungrange Gothenburg from 2pm.

The family is requesting donations to Marie Curie instead of traditional flowers.

Lyndsey added: "We are going to have a wee collection box for Marie Curie instead as that’s what my mum would want, they were absolutely amazing towards the end for my mum so instead of flowers just a wee small donation."
